" [left]I have a curious relationship to this Ambiophonics business, since I invented the idea of a
physical barrier separating left channel from right ear and vice versa--or at least
I published the first remarks on it, way back when. (It is hard to say that anyone actually
"invented" such an obvious idea!)
And that part is interesting to try. Actually, you do not want total separation really--
just separation of the high frequencies, mostly. So you can get most of the good
part of the effect by just taking a pillow and holding it edge-on in front of you with the
edge up against your face.
Try it and see how you like it!
(The crosstalk question is very old--Blumlein remarked on it in his patent
and other writings in the early 1930s).
If you like it, it is free!
However, I really have found that I do not care for the "Stereo dipole" and other
such systems. I think that systems that operate by such cancellation effects
(which are obviously involved in a big way there), however
spectacular they may sound at first, soon come to seem un-natural and fatiguing.
I have experimented a lot with a lot of them--Carver Sonic Hologram, Transaural Stereo,
CircleSound, Q Sound and on and on. In the end, none really worked for me.
Spectcalar sometimes but always bothersome and peculiar feeling in the end.
Other people might be different. But I think phase-iness is an un-natural and annoying thing.
In any case, the effect is surely not what the recording engineers intended. Stereo
recordings were not meant to be heard like headphones. In anything but the high frequencies
(where head shadowing is already pretty good and where you can use the pillow anyway),
the mix around the head is part of the process--it is expected to happen and plays a role in
the formation of natural images.
The rest of Ambiophonics--the hall synthesis part-- is an interesting idea in principle. But it
involves simply over-riding the actual recorded ambience to rep-lace it by some sort
of synthetic ambience that has nothing to do with the acoustics to which the musicians
responded and so on, And it can only really be used on dry, very close up recordings, which
have almost no hall ambience recorded.
I think it is kind of a gimmick. Not my kind of thing. It might have made sense back
20 years ago when close miking was popular, But nowadays most recording companies
are recording their own ambience! (or at least a lot of them are). One does not
need to fake it. And to use that hall synthesis stuff on recordings with natural ambience
makes no sense to me. This idea was tried out by the Japanese companies(JVC, Yamaha etc)
many years ago. It failed because it is just soundeffects, not really anything real. It still is.
I would give the whole thing a miss. If you cannot resist trying crosstalk cancellation,
do not spend any big money. You can buy a Carver Sonic Hologram used for around
$100 and see how you like it. I would be surprised if you used it for more than a day or two.
TheAMbiophonics people talk a good line, and the demos can be good(they are capable people). But in the
end, I think it is very much a wrong set of ideas. Ralph Glasgal knows a lot about how people
here space, but that does not mean he is on the right track.
This stuff has staged a comeback because DSP people are interested in programs that will
induce people to buy their stuff. (This kind of thing is really easy to program up digitally).
But it is really not a good idea.
I would stick with what you have and enjoy the music. Or just add on some surround sound
of the ordinary sort, nothing synthetic, just a way to play five channel recordings.
(Try my Water Lily Acoustics Mahler 5 SACD in surround! You won't find yourself needed anything more
I think. )
