Mercedes-Benz AG has announced today that it’s going to be introducing support
for the ultra-immersive Dolby Atmos Music format to a range of its latest luxury cars.
Dolby Atmos Music revolutionises the audio experience, mixing music into
a three-dimensional space that puts you at its heart rather than simply
sending channels of sound to specific speakers. So it’s exciting to see that
the Mercedes Dolby Atmos Music implementation appears to be a strikingly serious one,
powered by a remarkable 31 loudspeakers along with eight (two per seat)
seat-mounted sound transducers/exciters.
Six of the system’s 3D speakers will be fitted above you to deliver the
key Dolby Atmos height/‘voice of God’ effects; four near-ear speakers will be
fitted into the front seats; and bass will come courtesy of a meaty 18.5-litre subwoofer.
The speakers will be powered, meanwhile, by two amplifiers delivering
a massive 1750 watts of total output.

The Mercedes Dolby Atmos Music system will be built into the brand’s optional
Burmester high-end 4D and 3D sound systems, as well as being integrated into first
the Mercedes Maybach (from summer 2022), and then into Mercedes-Benz S-Class cars
fitted with the brand’s new MBUX system. The result, claims Mercedes, will be
‘state-of-the-art concert halls on wheels’.
The Maybach becomes one of the first cars in the world to offer built-in Dolby Atmos
music, joining the 21-speaker Dolby Atmos systems recently introduced for Californian
brand Lucid’s premium ‘Air’ range.
