So it's become apparent that the set does indeed have direct back lighting, it appears to be in 4-5 sectors of the set, however there are issues with the design of this, leading to very inconsistent back lighting of images, and indeed it is apparent that the backlights are of different colours! This might not be a problem if you only ever watch full screen and bright TV shows / full screen bright games, but the issue is massive as soon as you watch anything dark (Haunting on Hill House for example) or films that have borders.
The effect of this is that its like you are looking through a reflection constantly which causes eye strain.
I've uploaded photos of both the original and replacement sets to show the fault in a dark room (dim lit or in my pictures, lights off) with a dark (black) input. The darker of the two images is the old (original, October 2018 manufacture date) and the brighter is the new (November 2018 manufacture) set.
Both of these sets were from different batches a month apart so I can say that this is actually an issue with the design of the set itself rather than just blind luck that I received 2 faulty sets.
Needless to say they are both being returned for a refund....
