המלחמה של הפפתחים של קודי בשימוש הפירטי העיקרי בפלטפורמה הזאת נשמכת. עכשיו הם שוקלים להוסיף תמיכה ב DRM בגרסה הבאה 18 כדי להלחם בתכנים פיראטים עי תוספים ולעודד חברות סרטים וטלויזיה לספק תוספים ותכנים חוקיים עבור קודי. הרעיון הסופי הוא שקודי יסרב לנגל קבצי וידאו פירטיים שאינם כוללים DRM. כמובן השאלה היא מה יהיה עם קבצי וידאו חוקיים שלהם אין DRM. בשלב הראשון הם רק יוסיפו את התמיכה ב DRM ככל הנראה.

לא יודע אם זה קשור אבל בשרשור של ה xiaomi mibox בפורום של קודי יש הוראות על איך לגרום לאמזון לעבוד עם גירסת אלפא של קודי 18 ואני חייב להודות שנכון לעכשיו זה עובד נהדר אצלי, למעשה זאת הדרך היחידה שבה אני יכול לצפות בתכנים של אמזון לפחות עד שאמזון יועילו בטובם לפתח אפליקציה יעודית למכשיר androidtv שהוא לא השילד

The trouble with a lot of this discussion is that it's not very clear what the specifics are. The idea, from our side, is that Chrome and Android have a binary blob that we can use to playback drm content. Since we're licensed under the GPL, we can't ship this blob, but we think it would be a useful tool to be able to say to rights holders that we at least have the ability to play Netflix or HBO Go or whatever. Being able to make use of that blob wouldn't in any way affect the rest of Kodi. Because of the imprecision of the discussion, I'm having a hard time figuring out if being able to play DRMed content in this way would be considered unethical or pandering or whatever.
I get the sense that a lot of people think this DRM discussion is about somehow locking down the non-drmed stuff, like people's libraries or addons that don't make use of drm. We have no interest in doing that, and even if we did, we couldn't. It's one of the many great reasons that Kodi is licensed under the GPL. Doing something like that is impossible.
Anyway, point being, the term "DRM" is a blanket that can mean "plays Netflix" and can also mean "locks down the entire application and installs malware." I'm having a hard time figuring out if the outrage is about the first of those, or a misunderstanding about the second of them.
