1. Harman/Kardon 930
2. Sansui G-901 (The G-9000, although identical, not nearly the same sonically)
3. Onkyo TX-8500 (Original not Mk II)I'm not familiar enough with the older tube units...
The H/K may have the best tuner I've experienced, separate or integrated. Not a sizable dropoff from the tube amps when I switch to it as a monolithic electronics unit. (The 730, although excellent, is not in the same league. I own both the 730 and 930.)
The Sansui G-901 has more power than the 930, and has a tuner and electronics that one would be hard-pressed to beat with separates. Not as warm as the H/K, and the tuner isn't an absolute performer like the H/K.
The Onkyo TX-8500 also has more power than the H/K, has a similar warmth to the H/K, but is grainy at the top by comparison. Unit not as stable electrically as the other two mentioned. Tuner is excellent, but once again, not in absolute terms like the 930.
Other great receivers...
Tandberg TR-2075/TR-2080... Nice amp section. Tuner is very hard-sounding...
Marantz 2330 (no "B")... Rare, best of the Superscope "2xxx" models. Not as "dry" sounding as other Marantz tuners of that vintage. Hence, the best listenability. All Marantz tuners of this vintage have the propensity to "oxidize" internally (smells like an old rusty tool box).
Marantz Nineteen... Had two, one was warm-sounding, the other was "boring." Slight "metallic" character. (I've never heard the Eighteen, which is supposedly the best receiver Marantz ever put out.) Tuner won't bring memories of the "9B."
Yamaha CR2020/CR2040... Excellent amp section- Almost sounds like Pass Aleph... Except a slight "grit" at extreme top. Tuner good, not great.
Luxman R-1120/R-1120A... Compact. Clean, slightly hard sounding. Most units of that vintage have operational problems.
H/K 730. Warm. Does not have the authority or the "tube magic" of the 930. Tuner excellent, but again, not at the level of the 930. Would probably have rated it "4th."[/left]

Top 3 Vintage Receivers???

[left]If you do not listen to much FM, the Tandberg is one of the best out there. But I do not like the FM section in this receiver- "hard" sounding.
I've heard good things about the Sansui, but never actually heard a 9090DB. The G901 is excellent too, but stay away from the G9000- They look identical, but the G901 has much better sound.
Others to try- Marantz 2330 (not 2325 or 2330B, IMO the best "Superscope" model, but rare), Onkyo TX-8500 (original, stay away from MK II), Harman/Kardon 930 (my favorite, best FM tuner I've ever heard, but maybe not enough power), and Luxman R-1120 ("A" version OK too, reliability a concern).[/left]

H/K: 630 / 670 / 560 / 730 / 930
[left]Cannot comment on the H/K 630... Never had one.
I also cannot comment on any of the phono sections... Never tried them. (I think they're MM only.)
H/K 670
[imgbig]http://img.canuckaudiomart.com/uploads/ ... r-face.jpg[/imgbig]
Strengths- One of few 70's integrated receiver that actually puts out power into real-world
speakers consistent with its rating. Neutral. Excellent bottom-end response. Excellent lateral staging.
Weaknesses- Has an solid-state "grit," like later Onkyo except not as severe. Tended to sound "boring" and
"amusical." (Sucked the life out of the music.) Had thermal tracking/bias problems.
H/K 560
[imgbig]http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab21 ... G_2182.jpg[/imgbig]
Strengths- Similar to 670 except not quite as much power. (One lower in the same line.) More-musical and more-reliable than the 670.
Weaknesses- Solid-state character not as pronounced.
H/K 730
[imgbig]http://img.canuckaudiomart.com/uploads/ ... ceiver.jpg[/imgbig]
Strengths- A good one is 90 percent of a H/K 930. Musical, almost tube-like in character. Honest 45 WPC rating. Excellent tuner section.
Weaknesses- Has severe sample variation. Bad ones sound "dry." A little "anemic" in the bass. Needs a benign speaker load.
H/K 930
[imgbig]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g9vWRixqyk8/T ... %2Blit.jpg[/imgbig]
Strengths- Pre/amp like the H/K 560 except more-musical. But with much better bass drive than the 730. Maybe the most-musical '70's integrated receiver made. The tuner section is not only the best I've heard in an integrated receiver, but also the best amongst tuners period.
Weaknesses- More solid-state character than a good 730, but only slightly so. (But unlike the 730, the two units I have sound almost identical.)[/left]
