http://www.hollywoodstudiorentals.com/u ... center.pdf
Loudspeakers.

Today I started design work on a more Israeli-friendly variation on the Jazz Modules theme. This model will be the same height as the Jazz Modules but not as wide nor as deep, and will be a little less efficient but will retain the dynamic capabilities of the Jazz Modules. The bass tuning will be user-adjustable over a very wide range, so that the speaker can be adapted to a wide variety of room acoustic situations. I hope to have the first production pair finished in a couple of months. I have had something like this in the back of my mind for a while, and it looks like now is the time to go ahead with it.
The model that I referred to in my previous e-mail, which will be making its debut at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, is a satellite/subwoofer sytem. The satellites will be about 95 dB efficient, and the subwoofer system consists of four small subwoofer modules and a single amplifier. The idea is to spread the subs around the room somewhat asymmetrically, so that the room-induced peak-and-dip pattern of each individual sub will be significantly different - but the average will be much smoother than any one sub would have been, and this smoothing will be in effect throughout the room, rather than confined to the "sweet spot" (as would be the case with a single equalized sub). In practice, this is probably too much stuff to be practical in a small room - even though the smaller the room, the more improvement in bass smoothing this approach is likely to offer.

Duke's response: That is the tweeter on top. The tweeter is a compression driver mounted to a type of horn (shofar) called a "waveguide". It has constant directivity, which means that its radiation pattern does not change with frequency (within the operational range). The radiation pattern is 90 degrees wide. The crossover frequency to the woofer is about 1700 Hz, which is where the woofer's pattern has narrowed to 90 degrees - thus their radiation patterns are the same in the crossover region.
In my opinion, the radiation pattern matters because the reverberant field matters. The timbre of voices and instruments comes not only from the first-arrival sound, but also from the reverberant sound within the room. Live instruments produce reverberant sound that has almost the same tonal balance as the first-arrival sound, but most speakers do not because their radiation patterns change too much.
Here is a simple test, next time you go shopping for speakers and can't decide between two models that both sound very good when you sit in the "sweet spot": Turn the music up a bit louder than normal and walk out of the room, leaving the door open. Listen through the open doorway, but stand were you cannot see the speakers. Now, all of the sound that you hear will be reverberant sound. If it still sounds like live music when you listen from outside the room, that is a very good sign, and all else being equal the speaker that does the best job on this test will likely be the speaker that is the most enjoyable long-term. I can explain why if you would like.

[left]Hey Duke,
Welcome to our site, and thanks for joining us.
I'm sure Ziv has already translated the remarks, but the comments on the design were primarily that the proportions make the speakers appear "chubby" (George Costansa was mentioned). What were the guidelines you had followed during the design process?
